Huaypo and Salt Mines on ATVs

Thirty kilometres of rural track between 3,300 and 3,700 metres, linking two places almost nobody visits on the same day: Huaypo Lake and the Maras salt pans.

Fifty minutes of transfer to the Cruzpata base and fifteen of guided practice before setting off — enough for anyone who has never ridden an ATV, because the surface is packed dirt rather than technical trail. Then two hours off-road to the lake, with the Verónica and Chicón peaks in view for most of the ride.

From there you return to base and continue by van to the Maras salt pans: thousands of terraced salt pools cut into the hillside, worked since before the Incas and still farmed today by the families of the community.

This is the most demanding of the four lake trips — rated moderate, groups of up to 12 — and the only one that pairs riding with heritage. Two mechanics ride with the group alongside the official guide.

Entry to the salt pans costs S/20 and is paid separately, in cash. Meals are not included either. Bring a windbreaker and closed shoes: at 3,700 metres and moving, wind is the real cold.
